Fashion Industry Fights Covid

The fashion and luxury sector has been one of the hardest hit industries due to the pandemic. The industry as a whole is projecting a 600 billion dollar decline on sales this year. Despite these losses, there is a rally cry as the fashion industry fights covid. Hundreds of companies are supporting medical communities, relief orgs, families and businesses. The following is a roundup of some amazing companies helping support the front lines as well as people impacted by Covid-19. Giving Back

  1. Italian designer Montcler is donating $10 million that will go toward building a new hospital in Milan with 400 intensive care spots.
  2. Kering (and it’s brands including Gucci) are donating $1,000,000. This to assist with the protective gear for healthcare workers. And with fashion companies trying to survive through A Common Thread, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund for Covid-19 relief.
  3. LVMH is donating 40 million face masks being delivered from China for French healthcare workers. They are also tapping into perfume and cosmetic manufacturing facilities to produce hydro-alcohol. This for distribution to healthcare workers in France.
  4. Sustainable footwear brand Allbirds has a new campaign called “Better Together.” The point? For every pair of shoes purchased, a pair of their Wool Runners  will be donated to healthcare workers. So far $500,000 worth of shoes have been donated.
  5. Crocs plans to donate 10,000 shoes per day to medical professionals. And have even set up a site for health care workers to sign up for free shoes. They are also offering a 30 percent discount for shoes to be bought and donated.
  6. Fanatics, Hugo Boss, Carhartts have each stopped production of their normal merchandise. Instead facilities will produce masks and protective gear for healthcare workers.
  7. Companies like Frye are partnering with Feeding America. They are donating a percentage to help food banks as well as the School Lunch Program. The latter ensures 22 million school children who rely on lunch at school continue will have access to meals.
  8. Khloe Kardashian’s company Good American and Jennifer Meyer’s eponymous jewelry company are donating a portion of profits to L.A. based Baby2Baby. The organization provides essential items like diapers, formula, blankets, hygiene items and school supplies to children, aged 0-12.
  9. Under Armour has pledged $1,000,000 to Feeding America and $1 million in both monetary contribution plus equipment and apparel to Good Sports. This organization “gives all kids the lifelong benefits of sport and physical activity by providing new equipment, apparel and footwear to those most in need.” Under Armour is also manufacturing specialty equipment like masks, shields and fanny packs for healthcare workers.
  10. Ralph Lauren has pledged $10 million. This is the largest donation of a luxury company to date, to coronavirus relief efforts.
  11. Prada SpA is donating funds to the ICUs of 3 new Milan hospitals. It is also producing garments and masks for hospital workers in Tuscany.
  12. Bulgari is producing hand sanitizer gel  in conjunction with fragrance partner ICR. The gel will be distributed in recycleable bottles to the Italian Civil Protection department.
  13. Mayhoola (parent company of Valentino and Balmain) is donating €1 million to Madrid’s IFEMA, the temporary coronavirus hospital there. They are also donating a ventilation system to Milan’s Sacco Hospital in Milan and  €1 million to the hospital. They pledged another €1 million to the national disaster and catastrophes office in the Italian government.
  14. The Michael Kors label is donating $1 million, which the designer will personally match. The funds are intended for A Common Thread and other NY based relief organizations.
  15. Donatello Versace and her company donated one million yen and 700,000 euros respectively to the Chinese Red Cross and to the medical community in Italy.
  16. Jimmy Choo has pledged $500,000 to relief organizations in the United Kingdom.
  17. Tod’s Della Valle Famili has pledged €5 million to the Italian Civil Protection Department. Funds are earmarked to families of health professionals who died while caring for others during the pandemic.
  18. Close to home, AG, the luxury denim manufacturer, is donating $1 million to L.A. County Covid 19 response fund.
  19. Havaianas, the Brazilian company, has converted its factories to churn out protective equipment and test kits for Brazillian healthcare workers.
  20. H & M is organizing its suppliers to produce protective equipment to hospitals all over the world.
  21. Saks Fifth Avenue pledged $600 thousand to various Covid-19 relief organizations,  including Girls Inc. This organization  provides social and emotional support for girls affected by the pandemic.
  22. The Fashion Institute of Technology is mobilizing students, alumni and faculty to utilize its resources and talents. They are producing medical grade masks for health professionals in New York City, a spot overrun by the pandemic.
  23. Chanel will not only produce protective face masks, it has also promised to keep on all of its employees through the pandemic.
  24. Brooks Brothers factories are shifting from suits to hospital gowns. Producing 150,000 of the pieces per day for medical personnel.
  25. Revolve is tapping into its global partners to produce one million masks to allocate  globally.
  26. L.A. brand Rails has secured and is donating 10,000 medical grade masks to hospitals in L.A., San Francisco, New York, New Orleans and Detroit. They have also “put a pause on garment production.” Instead they are producing non-medical masks from 100% cotton for personal use and protection. They wil be donating these masks to local communities as well as making them available for purchase. For every pack of 5 bought, Rails will donate a pack to communities for essential workers and businesses.
  27. Geox has committed €1 million to healthcare professionals who are battling COVID  in the Veneto Region of Italy.
  28. Canada Goose has  donated RMB 1 million to the Wuhan Charity Foundation. It is set to produce and distribute scrubs for healthcare professionals and patient gowns to medical facilities in Canada.
  29. Mango, based in Barcelona, will donate 2 million masks for nurses and doctors in Spanish hospitals.
  30. Armani has donated €1.25 million to aid in the fight against Covid19. The funds will aid three Milan hospitals, one in Rome and to support the Civil Protection Agency.

We have highlighted these 30 major donations to date. But also want to recognize the contributions made by smaller fashion companies, design houses, suppliers, retailers and more. As the fashion industry fights covid, every mask, pair of shoes, dollar donated and employee salary paid makes a difference. We are in awe how, even in the face of devastating losses to be endured, the fashion industy is altering production and refocusing efforts to give back to the countries and people who have supported them over the years.
