Fall Finds at the Farmers Market

A wonderful weekend activity is a trip to the local farmers market. There you can load up on fresh produce, sample   prepared foods, grab colorful and fresh flowers. Dozens of farmers markets pop up weekly throughout So Cal. They feature local farmers and merchants selling foods and other goods. These markets are an ideal way to link rural and urban populations within a community while also promoting the benefits, appeal and availability of locally grown ingredients. For many, the abundance of seasonally fresh fruit makes these outings a weekly tradition in summer months. But with our temperate climate, many farmers markets operate year-round and there’s no reason to miss out on the fall finds at the farmers market.

Autumn at the Market

Don’t miss out on all the fall fare that makes a trip to the farmers market a weekly must-do. Fall finds at the farmers market include fruits such as pomegranates, apples, pears, raspberries and persimmons. Load up on dark leafy greens. Look for kale and spinach, or other vegetables like Brussels sprouts, squash, mushrooms and peas. And don’t forget about pumpkins—whether to put out on the porch for Halloween or to try cooking with fresh pumpkin. In addition, many farmers markets vendors sell  prepared foods like hummus or breads. A variety of nuts and beverages like fresh juices and coffees are also often available. Whether you’re looking to make a delicious vegetable soup, bake a homemade apple pie, or serve a platter of hummus and pita at an upcoming soiree, make time to head to your local farmers market for all the freshest ingredients.
