The holiday season allows us to reflect on the many blessings in our lives. During this season of family gatherings, celebration and gratitude, also consider ways to give back. Donate time and resources to spread some joy into the lives of others. Think of it as an attitude of gratitude.
Thanksgiving and beyond
We are big fans of the work being done with LA Mission Thanksgiving. The celebration fed hundreds of people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles. Even though the holiday has passed, financial donations are always still welcome. Another Thanksgiving tradition we love to support even after the event? Turkey Trot Los Angeles, just completing their seventh annual event in downtown Los Angeles. The race benefited the MLA FOOD BANK, always in need of donations the rest of the year as well.
Fighting Hunger with Food Drives
Did you know that one out of eight people in Los Angeles County experiences food insecurity? The mission of the LA Food Bank is to ensure that no one goes hungry. To that end, the organization has served more than one billion meals to the community since its founding in 1973. Consider organizing a virtual holiday food drive with family and friends. Start a team online and invite others to join. Set a goal for how much you’d like to raise. Each team member can then “shop” the aisles online. This type of drive saves time and resources for the food bank and is a great way to fight hunger in L.A. County.
Holiday from the Heart Program
The Holiday From the Heart program offers support to the most financially challenged families of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. The program fulfills basic needs and alleviates some of the stress felt during the holiday season. Sponsors receive a checklist that provides names, genders, ages, sizes and needs/wishes for each family you sponsor. Sponsors shop for the family, spending a suggested $75 to $150 for each family member.
Life Animal Rescue
Thinking about adding a pet to the family as a holiday gift? Consider adopting rather than shopping! LIFE (Living Is For Everyone) Animal Rescue takes special care to match the right home with the right pet. The thorough process ensures all animals go into appropriate, loving, forever homes. LIFE Animal Rescue also counts on volunteers to help care for all the animals. Adult volunteers help at the rescue centers and adults and youth over 14 sit with dogs every Saturday at adoption sites. Talk about an attitude of gratitude!
